4 Advantages of Eating Meat

There’s a lot of talk these days about vegetarian and vegan diets. In fact, if you buy into the vegan and vegetarian propaganda, it seems as though people who eat meat are doing so just for the joy of killing animals! But, the truth is there are several advantages to including meat in your diet. After all, meat has been a significant portion of most diets throughout the world for centuries. Here are four major advantages to choosing meat as a portion of a healthy diet.

1. Meat is a great source of protein. Though protein can be found in plant based foods, such as soy and legumes, they do not contain the amino acids that our bodies need the way meat does. Protein is also required for building muscle. In addition, eating red meat ensures an adequate iron intake. Many vegetarians and vegans suffer from iron deficiency, because, as hard as they might try, they cannot get enough leafy green vegetables to give them sufficient iron intake.
2. Meat contains the kind of phosphorous our bodies need. Legumes and cereals do contain phosphorous, but the type is much harder on the body to process. Meat’s phosphorous is absorbed immediately.
3. Meat is filling. Meat’s protein sustains the body for longer than the high carbohydrates found in vegetarian diets.
4. Lean meat is actually healthier than the fake substitute meats. Don’t think you’re doing your body a big favor by choosing a “soy burger” as a meat substitute. The soy in those products has been so over processed that it has lost most of its benefit. And, the only way to get it to taste even slightly like meat is to fill it full of chemicals and artificial flavors. You’re far better off with a lean cut of real meat.

So, if you want to eat meat, how can you do so in a way that’s healthy and environmentally friendly? Here are some tips.

o Choose your meat from natural, sustainable farms, preferably those in your area. You can usually find these farmers at your local farmer’s market. Meat processed in large processing plant is likely full of unhealthy hormones and is bad for the environment as well as your body. Local natural farmers produce higher quality, fresher meats and raise them in a humane and sustainable way.
o Choose lean cuts of beef, pork and poultry. Avoid cuts that are high in fat and avoid organ meats.
o Avoid processed meats like bacon, lunch meat, and salami. The sodium content is very high in these meats.
o Eat reasonable portions. The recommended portion of meat is about 3 ounces, which is about the size of a deck of playing cards.

Not everyone is meant to eat meat. But, not everyone is meant to be a vegetarian or vegan, either. When you choose your meat carefully, and eat it in moderation, it can be a healthy, delicious and filling source of protein in even the most conscientious diet.
